PRSA July Happy Hour

Join PRSA Cincinnati Chapter for a summer happy hour. We'll be celebrating the launch of the The Greater Cincinnati Black PR Pros

In 1944, Moss Kendrix was the first African American man to found his own PR agency (https://bit.ly/2lCTU9V). Considered the father of black PR, he paved the way for much of the minority representation in today’s advertising, marketing, and public relations. In 1957, Inez Kaiser became the first African American woman to found her own eponymous PR agency in the United States (https://bit.ly/2Mr4JaA). Her agency was also reported to be the first African American owned business in Kansas City, Missouri.

Despite the long tradition of practitioners of color, the field of public relations has a long way to go. This year, PRWeek released a fascinating mini-documentary giving voice to the experience of black PR professionals around the country (https://bit.ly/2Ee0Vck). As PRSA’s diversity chair, Anthony D’Angelo wrote recently, “To make progress we have to move past talking about D&I and acting intermittently, and commit to a multigenerational marathon with settled intention” (https://bit.ly/2oKI8LV).

Early this spring, some local pros in media, journalism, and PR got together to discuss the benefits of establishing a professional organization. One of the results of that discussion was the launch of the Greater Cincinnati Black PR Pros. This group was created to unite black PR and communication professionals in the Greater Cincinnati area. The group is designed to help members connect, support, share resources, and promote professional development. As a special interest group of the Greater Cincinnati Association of Black Journalists, this group hopes to become a mainstay for black communication professionals in the area.

Cincinnati PRSA is delighted to celebrate the launch of this new group at our July happy hour. Everyone is welcome, so let's join together for networking in a casual environment. Appetizers will be provided and a cash bar, featuring drink specials, will be availbale.

Tuesday, June 26 - 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Breaking Down the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer

Government, business, media...how strong is our trust in these organizations?

The 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals that trust in the U.S.has suffered the largest-ever-recorded drop in the survey's history among the general population. And, for the first time, media is the least trusted institution globally.

This past year saw CEO credibility rise sharply after a number of high-profile business leaders voiced their positions on the issues of the day. Now, nearly two-thirds of respondents say they want CEOs to take the lead on policy change instead of waiting for government, which now ranks significantly below business in trust in 20 markets.

How can you help your organizations and clients earn and maintain your key publics' trust in such an ever-changing environment?

Stephanie Shewmon from Edelman Worldwide will present the latest information released from the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer. Stephanie will be joined in an event panel by:

  • Greg DeBlasio, Associate Professor, Communications Department at NKU

  • Jeffrey Blevins, Head of the Department of Journalism & Associate Professor. University of Cincinnati

  • Moderator: Rob Pasquinucci, Senior PR Strategist, Intrinzic Brand Collaborative

Lunch is included with your registration.

A special thanks goes out to Edelman for sponsoring our lunch and to Intrinzic Brand Collaborative for providing the event venue.

The Complexities and Opportunities of Being a Woman in PR

As PR professionals, we work in a female dominated field. Yet many of us work in male dominated industries, or work for a predominately male C-suite. According to Jennifer Risi of Ogilvy Public Relations, "Depending on who you ask, women hold anywhere from 61% to 85% of all PR jobs, and 59% of all PR managers are female. And yet, according to the 2014 World PR Report, only 30% of all global PR agencies are run by women."

Add to this ongoing discussions around work-life balance, a persistent gender pay gap, and contradictory advice to "lean in" but not to be too aggressive, we thought it was time to focus on "Women in PR."

Join us as we discuss the complexities and opportunities of being a woman in public relations! Lunch will be provided.

Panel Details:

  • Linda Dektas, Creative Storm

  • Brandy Jones, APR, Metro

  • Jackie Reau, Game Day Communications

  • Amy Vaughn, Women in Digital

  • Jenifer Moore, AAA (moderator)

In Case of Emergency (Members Only + 1 guest)

Many of us dream of landing a spot on CNN or the Today Show - media placement at its finest, right? But what if that dream is more of a nightmare that stems from a crisis of epic proportions?

Our December luncheon will feature Chad Yelton and Michelle Curley from the Cincinnati Zoo, who will share their experiences handling what is arguably the worst PR crisis the zoo has experienced. Come learn how they managed the explosion of traditional news media and social media while balancing the sensitive subjects of animal and guest safety.

The Presidents Award is the highest honor Cincinnati PRSA can bestow on an individual who is outside the PR industry but uses public relations essentials like strategy, storytelling and brand building to make a positive impact on the Cincinnati community. Thane Maynard has always worked to represent Cincinnati and its world-famous zoo in the best light and has proven his expertise at communicating with various audiences throughout his career. Crafting Visions

Creative thinking is now one of the most sought after "commodities" in problem solving, organizational management and innovation. In this interactive session, experience first-hand how visual artists and designers utilize right brain thinking to construct a vision, problem solve, create and communicate.

Art Academy of Cincinnati Professors Paige Williams and Mark Thomas have more than 50 combined years working in the disciplines of art, design and education. They are co-founders of Thinc., a consulting collaborative that specializes in crafting vision and creative thinking through seminars and workshops. Both maintain professional, creative studio practices and have written extensively on the subject of creative thinking.

25 Video Tips, Tricks & Tactics You Can Use Today

In this session, attendees will learn:

  • How to find and organize stories for video

  • The one thing you must know before even pushing record

  • How to prevent mistakes during the recording and editing processes

  • What to do after your video is finished (hint: you're not done!)

Lunch will be provided!

Sign up now! But hurry - attendance is limited to the first 40 people.

Rocky Walls has one simple belief at the intersection of his personal and professional life: people need connections and the best ones come from communication that's real and simple.

A communicator to the core, all work and no play wouldn't really bother Rocky, but he has his fun too: he loves to hang out with his wife and two boys, and together they're Disney fanatics who visit Disney Parks annually. He's an amateur chef (though he won't tell us if he wears an apron), and believes whatever you can get out of a box or in a restaurant, you can make at home if you try, by golly. And like any real professional in the video biz, he's an avid fan of watching movies.

Rocky frequently speaks and advises on the subject of video strategy, drawing upon his experience overseeing the production thousands of videos through his company, 12 Stars Media, and their video production platform, Candidio.

Arm yourself with the tricks and tools you need to create the perfect video for your organization, project or event. Don't delay - sign up now!

Improvise: Crucial Skills for Your Success

Join the PRSA Cincinnati Chapter for a fun and informative lunch program on Tuesday, February 17 at the Newport Syndicate featuring guest speaker Fred Cook, CEO of the award-winning public relations agency Golin, and author of Improvise: Unconventional Career Advice from an Unlikely CEO.

Cook and his team have worked with some of the world's most well-known business leaders and brands, including Steve Jobs (Apple), Jeff Bezos (Amazon.com), Michael Eisner (Disney), as well as Nintendo and Southwest Airlines. Golin, with more than 50 locations worldwide, continues to be recognized for their outstanding work and positive results, having garnered 65 awards for work on behalf of clients, 11 major agency awards, and 7 awards for being a 'best place to work'.

Cook's book, Improvise: Unconventional Career Advice from an Unlikely CEO, has been featured on Forbes.com, The Huffington Post, Fast Company, and LinkedIn, and offers helpful career advice to professionals that will help set them apart from the pack.

About Fred Cook

Before joining the corporate ranks at the age of 36, he talked his way into a job as a cabin boy on a Norwegian tanker; peddled fake Italian leather goods to unsuspecting tourists, ran a rock-and- roll record company, started a service chauffeuring drunks home from bars; worked as a doorman at a five-star hotel; substitute-taught in Los Angeles's worst schools; and winged it as a novice tour guide. During his career, he's been ignored, lost, punched, flunked, fired, divorced, and arrested.

Cook shares the wisdom he's accumulated through his unconventional life experiences and provides an eye-opening look at how he found success on his own terms. His story will provide readers with the inspiration and the resolution they need to strike out and forge their own paths rather than sticking to the same well-worn road.

Join us for this exciting luncheon program, which is sponsored in part by the Newport Syndicate. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with Cook following his presentation and will also receive a signed copy of his recently released book.
